NAP Straidnahanna 11/4 (PP) – Catterick 16:05 – 2pts win WON +5.5pts

Sue Smith has a superb strike rate with runners over fences here, posting eleven wins from twenty-four and level stakes profit level of +£35.55 over the last three years. She runs Straidnahanna who hasn’t shown much in his three runs this season and was pulled up last time out, but that doesn’t tell the full story as that came in a much tougher race than today and he also has an excellent record at the course, winning on all three previous runs here with two of those victories coming over todays’ trip. Now 2lbs below his last winning mark and dropping back down to a Class 3 he can put his poor run behind him with victory today.

NB Jack Devine 15/8 (sky) – Catterick 14:00 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Rose Dobbin has her stable in fine form, posting three wins from her last six runners, and runs Jack Devine here. He won three times in point-to-points before moving to the Dobbin stable so should benefit from the step up in trip and looks to have plenty of scope for improvement so gets the nod here.

NAP Present Times 9/2 (B365) – Exeter 15:05 – 2pts win **available at 11/2 with coral & laddys after posting, P&L will remain based on 9/2 unless SP is greater Lost -2pts

Bottom-weight Present Times hails from a yard with a 33% strike rate at the course and has won three of his last four, including one over course and distance. He was beaten by Lovenormoney last time out but the pair pulled well clear of the remaining runners and was only raised 1lbs whereas Lovenormoney was hit with a 10lbs rise and struggled off his new weight when last seen.

The main danger could be Overland Flyer who won by over twenty lengths on racecourse debut in January 2017 before a disappointing run just three weeks later. He hasn’t been seen since and has only run on good ground so far but arrives here for an in-form stable and stays the trip so looks an interesting runner here.

Sunday Shortlisted Runners

13:40 Punchestown

It would be somehat of a shock if Enda Bolger didn’t emerge victorious from this race considering he has won it six times in the last ten years, runs last years’ winner Auvergnat and also has course and distance winners Josies Orders and Cantlow in the mix too. A combination tri-cast could be worth a go but for win purposes I’d have to go with Cantlow as he has the benefit of Nina Carberry in the saddle, an excellent jockey who has 6 wins and five placed from twelve in the last three years over fences at the course.

Cantlow (WIN) NR

14:00 Exeter

Paul Nicholls has started to find a few winners in recent weeks and has an excellent record at the course so his runner Blu Cavalier has to be respected. A solid second behind the exciting prospect If The Cap Fits over course and distance last time out he should prove tough to beat if acting on the likely heavier ground.

Samburu Shujaa was a solid third on soft ground on hurdles debut last time out, should improve for that experience and is again partnered with champion jockey Richard Johnson, while Golden Sunrise and Mount Rushmoore have both shown promise and are open to further progression.

Blu Cavalier (WIN) Lost

16:10 Exeter

Elegant Escape was only a length behind current Ballymore Novices Hurdle favourite Samcro in a point-to-point in April 2016 and subsequently won his first two over hurdles, before struggling at Graded level at both Cheltenham and Aintree festivals. Switched to the larger obstacles he has since won a Grade 2, is yet to finish outside the first two in four runs over fences and has the trip and conditions to suit, yet I can’t help but feel he will find one too good again today.

Pobbles Bay performed with credit in the Welsh Grand National last month and will benefit from the drop back in trip but for the winner i’m going for Ramses De Teillee who has won two from two in heavy ground over a three mile trip and with only three rivals should be able to dominate.

Ramses De Teillee (WIN)

16:40 Exeter

Le Rocher has won three from three since tackling fences, all in testing conditions over trips ranging from two to two and a half miles. He has to carry top-weight today but arrives in top form and his trainer has won four from eight in the last three years over fences at the course so he should be capable of maintaining his unbeaten record today.

Rayvin Black won on only previous visit to the course and ran an excellent race when just touched off in second last time out so rates as the main danger, although chase debutant Verni has soft ground form and is an interesting contender for P Hobbs.

Le Rocher (WIN)

NAP Kylemore Lough 10/3 (Whill) – Warwick 15:15 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Kylemore Lough won five in a row in the 2015-2016 season, culminating in a Grade 1 success in the Ryanair Gold Cup at Fairyhouse. Subsequently tried over a couple of different trips he hasn’t got his nose in front since but won on his only previous run at the course and returns to a trip that has seen him win over four times from nine so should have the class to return to winning ways now back in handicap company.

NB Irish Roe 10/1 (Whill – 4 places) – Newbury 15:35 – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

Irish Roe very nearly reeled in Maria’s Benefit last time out and boasts four victories and two seconds from her last six runs. She has built up an excellent understanding with jockey Henry Brooke and has three wins and a placed effort from five over the trip so it would be a surprise if she’s not fighting it out at the finish.

3B The Eaglehaslanded 10/1 (B365) – Newbury 13:50 – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

The first of today’s live ITV races sees the eagerly awaited re-appearance of Barters Hill, who returns following a 15 month absence from injury. If fully fit and raring to go following such a lay-off he should have too much class for these and it would be great to see him return to the winners enclosure, but with three places on offer i’m opting for The Eaglehaslanded who has won a couple of times on return from a lay-off, is effective over the trip and in expected conditions and has been dropped 4lbs by the handicapper.

13:50 Newbury – The Eaglehaslanded (E/W) Lost

The first of today’s live ITV races sees the eagerly awaited re-appearance of Barters Hill, who returns following a 15 month absence from injury. 14:05 Warwick – Woolstone One WON (SP 5/1)

Midnight Jazz is a previous course winner and was only a half length behind Poppy Kay at Listed level last time out so it would be a surprise if he wasn’t in the mix here, while Midnight Tour is better than when last seen and should be capable of a big run returning to a trip that she has won over previously.

That said, i’m taking a tentative poke at Woolstone One who won with what looked to be a bit in hand at Doncaster last month and was finishing very strongly so should benefit from the extra furlong she encounters here.

14:25 Newbury – Native River WON (SP 8/11)

A disappointing turn out but all three runners can be considered in with chances. Native River is a class act and will likely go off at a pretty short price but is unbeaten in two over course and distance, won this race last year and has been given plenty of time to get over an excellent third in last years’ Gold Cup. He won his three previous races over fences and should get back to winning ways here.

14:40 Warwick – Saint Calvados WON (SP 4/9)

Saint Calvados takes a step up in class but could be a star in the making. A winner of two from two over todays’ race distance since joining Harry Whittington, he beat a couple of subsequent winners first time out and was a commanding winner last time out so is an exciting prospect and could prove tough to beat here.

North Hill Harvey won his first two over fences and has an excellent record over the trip but the recent stable form has to be a concern so the bigger danger looks to be Drumcliff who is unbeaten in two over fences and will be at home in the conditions.

15:00 Newbury – Politologue Lost

Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls both have good records in this race and without meaning any disrespect to Valdez this looks to be a match up between the two here. Altior won the race last year and has the perfect record of eleven wins from eleven over jumps, however hasn’t been seen since last April and will likely be using this race as a springboard for Cheltenham in March. He has won on seasonal return before but I think if he is going to be beaten it could be today.

Politologue has won his last three and has won six from nine over fences. A top class chaser in his own right, he is taken to give Altior his first loss.

15:15 Warwick – Kylemore Lough 2nd

Kylemore Lough won five in a row in the 2015-2016 season, culminating in a Grade 1 success in the Ryanair Gold Cup at Fairyhouse. The Young Master hasn’t won since April 2016 but showed signs that he could be returning to form with a solid third at Kempton last month and is partnered with in-form jockey Noel Fehily for today’s race. He has been racing in higher grades than today but won the only time he has raced in a class 3, is two wins from two over this trip and is now 9lbs below his last winning mark so looks to have a lot in his favour.
