NAP Cappananty Con 6/1 (B365) – Wolves 16:15 – 2pts win Lost -2pts (hood removed late)

Boom The Groom has won three from six over course and distance, all three coming when racing off higher handicap marks and in higher class races. His last few runs on turf have been a little underwhelming but the switch back to tapeta and the application of first time cheekpieces means he is an interesting contender.

You’re Cool was last seen winning at Chelmsford in May, battling well to beat the re-opposing Cappananty Con by a length, but now finds himself racing off a career high mark so looks vulnerable for win purposes.

Harry’s Bar is another last time out winner who also finished ahead of Cappananty Con when last seen. That was his first attempt at the minimum trip so he is entitled to improve on that, however a 7lbs rise will undoubtedly make things tougher.

This brings us to our selection Cappananty Con who has an excellent record at Wolves, posting four wins from seven runs, including two over todays’ trip. Unlike his afore-mentioned rivals he has no handicap rises to contend with so looks capable of reversing the form with both given his return to Wolves and the revised weights in his favour.

NB Ice Age 6/1 (Betfred) – Windsor 19:45 – 1pt win 3rd -1pt

Ice Age has been somewhat inconsistent this season but has showed on numerous occasions that if he arrives at a racecourse on a good day he is more than capable of winning races. In fact, he won this race last season, off a 6lbs higher mark than today, and has four wins & two places from eight course and distance runs. The return to six furlongs is a positive so at the prices I am happy to have a small play.

Sunday 30th June

NAP Project Bluebook 4/1 (PP) – Cartmel 14:35 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

The whole racecard at Cartmel today looks top-drawer and this race in-particular promises to be an absolute cracker, with a number who would have to be considered in with a chance. Wells De Lune has the perfect record of four wins from four over course and distance and is only 1lbs higher than his last victory, while Tonto’s Spirit also has an excellent strike rate at the track and arrives in good form having won over the larger obstacles last time out.

Local trainer James Moffatt sends Altruism who has won five from eight here at Cartmel and is 5lbs lower than when last successful over the trip, while Dr Newland has his stable in fine form and sends Magnor Cartor in search of his hat-trick following wins at Uttoxeter and Southwell in recent weeks.

All that said, preference is for Project Bluebook who was a Grade 2 winner over hurdles in 2017 and suggested that he will be winning again soon after a solid second in the Grade 3 Swinton Hurdle at Haydock in May, finishing just a length behind Le Patriote. He is yet to race at this unique course but races for a stable who have had three winners from four runners in the last three years over hurdles at the course. With a strong pace to aim at and the long run in expected to suit, he is the choice to emerge victorious

NB Beau Sancy 11/4 (sky) – Cartmel 16:15 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Princeton Royale has two wins and a second from three course and distance runs but has been raised 3lbs for placing last time out and has never won off a mark this high while Alderbrook Lad is back down to last winning mark, has a 7lbs claimer in the saddle and is a four-time course and distance winner so shouldn’t be underestimated, for all he will have to improve on his last few runs.

Demi Sang was an impressive winner at the course last month but has gone up 9lbs and both prior attempts over distances in excess of 18furlongs have seen him fail to finish so does come with risks attached.

With this in mind, preference is for Beau Sancy who has won four from six since joining Olly Murphy, returning from a five month break and a wind op with a commanding victory at Kelso in May, beating a subsequent winner by eight lengths. He is proven over the trip, has perfect ground conditions and has struck up an excellent relationship with in-form jockey Gavin Sheehan so looks more than capable of following up with another victory today.

Also…

The Jam Man evs (B365) – Cartmel 15:05 WON

The Jam Man was backed as if defeat was out of the question at Southwell last week, effortlessly pulling clear of rivals when entering the straight, jumping well and winning eased down by seven lengths. Aidan Coleman keeps the ride and if arriving in the same mood a 7lbs penalty looks unlikely to stop the six-year-old from going in again.

Al Co bounced back to form with victory here at Cartmel last month but now steps back in trip and hasn’t notched back-to-back victories since 2012 so the bigger danger looks to be Justforjames who won over this trip on penultimate run and followed up with a solid second over course and distance last time out.

Saturday 29th June

Yes, we are back!!! Apologies for the lack of blog updates over the last week, sometimes real life (work) has to take priority and the last week of the month and quarter is always a hectic one!

Anyways…. business as usual today – all the stats runners, in-form trainers, ITV races and of course our main selections for the day are now below… oh and a race preview for the Northumberland Plate thrown in for good measure!!

NAP Madhmoon 5/2 (B365) – Curragh 17:20 – 2pts win Lost -2pts

Finished just behind the re-opposing Anthony Van Dyck in the Derby last month but didn’t get the clearest of runs and only has to find a half-length based on that performance. Both finished ahead of Japan who came out and blitzed his rivals at Royal Ascot last week so if both run to form then this race should be between the two market principles, with Madhmoon taken to reverse the form with the Aidan O’Brien runner.

NB Glorious Journey 10/3 (B365) – Newmarket 15:15 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Won a Group 3 race over this trip last season and ran an excellent second to Dream Of Dreams over what looked to be too short a trip when last seen. A prior course winner who looks capable of further progression and races for a trainer with an excellent record at the course so can get the better of another prior course winner in Limato.

3B Kings Advice 11/1 (PP – 6 places) – Newcastle 15:35 – 1pt e/w 6th +1.75pts

The Northumberland Plate was first run in 1833 and is now one of the richest two-mile handicaps across the globe with the winner taking home a cool £92,385. Originally run on turf, it switched to the Tapeta track in 2016 and in recent years the most successful trainer has been Roger Charlton who has saddled the winner twice in the last four years. Unfortunately we won’t get to see his runner Withhold in his bid to become the first back-to-back winner since Tug Of War in 1978 as a lung infection has meant he is unable to take his place.

Moving on to those that are still scheduled to run we see Stratum, a Willie Mullins runner who commands respect given his record over todays’ trip when on the flat and over obstacles. A placed effort on his only prior run on an all-weather surface gives confidence that he will handle the track and with stamina assured he will likely be involved at the business end of the race.

Gibbs Hill hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since July 2017 and has only raced over shorter trips than he encounters here, however has won on return from a long absence before and is yet to finish outside the top three places in all seven career runs to date. He was beginning to look a high-class horse in the making and as the early market suggests he could regain the winning thread with the minimum of fuss, however this does look a tough race to make your re-appearance and for that reason I am happy to look elsewhere.

Kings Advice is unbeaten in six career runs for trainer Mark Johnston, three of which have come on an all-weather surface. This will be his toughest test to date, and is also his first attempt over a two-mile trip, but he has beaten a couple of decent yardsticks on his journey to this point and always finishes his race off strongly so the trip should be within his compass and it is difficult to look past him for a place at the very least.

Others to consider in this typically competitive race are Bartholomeu Dais who has an excellent record on the surface and Speedo Boy who always tends to run well in big-field handicaps.

Really looking forward to seeing Addeybb & Siskin over at The Curragh today – both short prices (evens & 11/8 with Skybet) so no singles, but I will be having a personal play on the double.
