Glorious Goodwood Day One

1.50 – Matchbook Betting Handicap

  • M Johnston has won this race four times since 2009 & runs Rainbow Rebel

Selection: Dark Red 8/1 e/w (Ladbrokes – 4 places)

  • won this race last year (although was subsequently disqualified for interference)
  • 1 win & 1 placed effort from two prior runs at the course
  • has a good record over the trip (5 wins & 6 placed from 19 runs)
  • has been holding his form well (placed in his last 4 runs)

2.25 – Vintage Stakes

The Vintage Stakes is a Group 2 race, open to two-year-old horses, run at Goodwood over a distance of 7 furlongs. It was established in 1975 and was originally classed at Listed level. It was given Group 3 status in 1986 before being promoted to Group 2 level in 2003 and has produced a number of winners that have gone on to achieve victory in one of the following year’s Classics.

  • R Hannon won this race in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and runs Mordred
  • A O’Brien won this race in 2014 & 2016 and runs Van Beethoven
  • The biggest priced winner in the last 10 years is 9/2
  • 9 of the last 10 winners either won or finished 2nd prior to running in this race

Confiding put in a taking performance when winning on debut last month, given a patient ride before being asked to win his race a furlong from home, quickly coming clear and staying on strongly to win nicely. Eight of the first nine home have since come out and won again so the form of that race has been boosted nicely and a similar performance here could see Noel Meade’s runner prove tough to beat.

Blonde Warrior has won his last two in impressive fashion, asserting himself in the final couple of furlongs on both occasions, readily pulling away from rivals. Today sees a change of jockey although being partnered with William Buick is seen as a positive as he has an excellent strike rate at Goodwood and he looks to be the main danger to the likely favourite and looks well worth an each way play at the odds.

Dark Vision is unbeaten in two and has finished both races off really strongly so this step up in trip shouldn’t be an issue. He is another with a positive jockey booking as Silvestre De Sousa takes over in the saddle and has a good strike rate when riding for the stable.

Both Archie Watson and Tom Dascombe have been amongst the winners in recent weeks and send Federal Law and Drogon respectively. Both have victories over today’s trip on fast ground to their name and both look capable of further progression so are respected accordingly.

Selection: Confiding 9/2 (PP)

3.00 – Lennox Stakes

The Lennox Stakes is open to horses aged three years or older, run at Goodwood over a distance of 7 furlongs. It is named after the Duke of Lennox, one of the dukedoms held by the Duke of Richmond, the owner of Goodwood Racecourse and was established in 2000 as a Group 3 race before being upgraded to a Group 2 race in 2003.

  • Winners since 2000 – 7x aged 3, 5x aged 4, 5x aged 5

Emmaus is unbeaten in three over a seven-furlong trip and is a personal SimplyHorseTips favourite, however has been pulled from a couple of races due to the very fast ground and I fear he may not get optimum conditions here today.

Tip Two Win was an excellent second to Saxon Warrior in the 2000 Guineas and followed up with a solid fourth behind Without Parole in the St James’s Palace Stakes when last seen. A winner of two from three over seven furlongs, the drop back in trip won’t be an issue and he looks to have a strong chance of getting back to winning ways.

Dutch Connection finished second in this race in 2015 and returned to win the race in 2016, giving an overall record of three wins and a second from four runs over course and distance. He has disappointed so far this season and this actually sees a step back up from Group 3 races but despite this he would be dangerous to dismiss given his course record.

Suedois and Sir Dancealot are consistent types and both have place claims if running to their best, but for the winner I am opting for D’Bai who won the Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes on last run over seven furlongs and boasts a 50% winning strike rate over this trip. Trainer Charlie Appleby does well with his runners at Goodwood and has been in excellent form over the last few weeks so can enhance both these records with another victory here.

Selection: D’Bai 9/1 (sky) *I am playing win only but there are 4 places available for anyone who wants to play each way

3.35 – Goodwood Cup

The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1, open to horses aged three years or older, run at Goodwood over a distance of 2 miles, and was initially classed as a Group 2 race. It was relegated to Group 3 status in 1985 but regained Group 2 status in 1995 and in 2017 the status was raised again to Group 1 level, with the purse increasing from £300,000 to £500,000 in the process.

Stradivarius won this race last year and put Vazirabad, Torcedor and Order Of St George in their place in the Ascot Gold Cup last time out. We won’t get to see the French raider Vazirabad or Order Of St George renew rivalries here but Jessica Harrington has declared Torcedor and it is her runner who looks the most likely to put up a challenge to the hot favourite. I can’t see any reason why Torcedor would be able to reverse the form with Stradivarius but he does look the most likely to fill the runner-up spot.

Call To Mind got to within three lengths of Stradivarius over a shorter trip in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup in May and followed up with victory over today’s trip in the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup at Belmont last month. With the William Haggas stable and jockey James Doyle in excellent recent form it would be no surprise to see a bold show however in truth he is more likely to be battling it out for minor honours.

A final mention goes to Sir Mark Prescott’s runner St Michel who has made the frame in all five runs over today’s trip and has a victory over course and distance to his name. He hasn’t been seen in almost twelve months and this will definitely be his toughest race to date but with the stable in such good form he could outrun his odds.

Selection: Stradivarius 8/13 (PP)

4.10 – EBF Maiden Stakes

Selection: Gainsborough Hat 9/1 e/w (Whill)

  • No strong opinion in this race but both trainer and jockey in good form and have a decent strike rate when teaming up this season.

4.45 – Chelsea Barracks Handicap

  • El Astronaute won this race in 2017
  • Boom The Groom won this race in 2016

Selection: Outrage 10/1  e/w (PP – 4 places)

  • Decent 3rd last time out and races off the same mark today
  • 33% winning strike rate over the minimum trip
  • Jockey Luke Morris in excellent form, 25% winning strike rate on turf in the last 2 weeks

5.15 – Matchbook Time To Move Over Fillies Handicap

Selection: Labrega 8/1 e/w (PP – 4 places)

  • 1 win & 1 close 2nd from 2 runs over a mile
  • Beat 3 subsequent winners and showed a great attitude by battling back to win after being headed
  • Ryan Moore booked to ride

NAP Speed Company 20/1 (PP) – Ayr 16:00 – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

Trainer John Quinn has been in fine form in recent weeks and looks to have a great chance of another winner here with Speed Company. He hasn’t been seen to best effect in his two runs so far this season but as a result has been dropped 4lbs by the handicapper and also drops in to a Class 3 race for the first time since recording a course and distance victory in June 2017, beating the re-opposing Testa Rossa and taking his record in Class 3 races to three wins from three runs. He runs today off 6lbs lower than that last winning mark, has a record of two wins from three runs at Ayr and is re-united with jockey Phillip Makin (who boasts a record of three wins and a second from four rides when riding Speed Company) for the first time since that last victory so looks to have an excellent chance of another victory here.

All four of the afore-mentioned Testa Rossa’s turf victories have come here at Ayr (three over this trip) but they all came in lower grades than today and in the last couple of years his best form has been found on the all-weather at Newcastle so it is difficult to build a case for Jim Goldie’s runner today.

Mutamaded has posted all three career victories over today’s ten-furlong trip but all three came at Ripon. He carries top-weight and has been well beaten in his last couple of runs so may need the handicapper to drop him another couple of lbs before we see him in the winners’ enclosure again.

Michael Dods has had a few winners in recent weeks and his runner Mooltazem won over course and distance on penultimate run, taking his record to two wins and a second from four over the trip, although struggled off his new mark when only fourth of five at Ripon last time out. Jockey Callum Rodriguez has a decent strike rate at the course so he is respected accordingly, although may find a couple too strong for him today.

Ventura Dragon won over this trip at the first time of asking, staying on well to beat a couple of subsequent winners. He has gone up 4lbs as a consequence and is also without Connor Murtagh’s 5lbs claim this time around but could still be competitive with further progress anticipated.

Completing the shortlist is Nicholas T who has been holding his form well and was only half a length behind the winner when second last time out. He hasn’t won in over a year but is unexposed over the ten-furlong trip and it would be no surprise if he were in the mix at the business end of the race.

NB Monks Stand 10/1 (coral) – Lingfield 13:50 – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

With only seven runners due to line up for this race it makes things a little more difficult, however even with only two places available I think we have a good chance of getting a return from Monks Stand who won over course and distance earlier in his career and has an overall record of four wins from eight on an all-weather surface. He is partnered with Silvestre De Sousa who has ridden six winners from ten rides over the weekend and is two from two when riding the John Mackie trained four-year-old so although he hasn’t shown much in his last two runs they both came on turf so I’m expecting a much better run returning to an artificial surface.

NAP Imperial Presence 11/4 (B365) – Uttoxeter 16:15 – 2pts win WON +5.5pts

Dr Newland has had ten winners from his last twenty runners, nine of which had Sam Twiston-Davies in the saddle, so it would be no surprise to see another big run from Vosne Romanee. He defied a career-high mark in impressive fashion at Stratford earlier this month but carries a further 7lbs penalty for his troubles and coupled with the extra three furlongs he encounters here today I feel could prove vulnerable.

Harry Fry has a good record at Uttoxeter so Voix D’Eau, a twelve-length winner last time out, would have to be considered for a follow-up, however preference is for Imperial Presence who has won his last two and convincingly beat both Newton Geronimo and Voix D’Eau at Stratford when last seen in June. He won’t mind the forecast fast ground but has also won on good-to-soft so will be comfortable if any rain arrives and can take another step forward with victory here today.

NB Pentland Hills 7/2 (PP) – Pontefract 14:30 – 2pts win NR

Pentland Hills has improved for each run so far this season and put in his best performance to date when stepped up to this trip and finishing a solid second to a subsequent winner last time out. Jockey Silvestre De Sousa is an eye-catching booking for the ride – he has a 25% winning strike rate in the last 12 months at Pontefract and over the same time period is 3 wins from 3 when riding for the stable.

Sepre Presto has course form but needs to bounce back from a couple of poor recent efforts while Royal Cosmic is three from five over the trip but all wins have come on soft ground so the biggest danger looks to be Multellie who has won in higher grades off higher marks in the past. He hasn’t visited the winners enclosure in almost two years but has recent form figures of 322 and been getting closer with each run so wouldn’t be winning out of turn.

Saturday 28th July

Plenty of racing around today, quite like a few so will be having a personal play on the shortlisted runners and the Ascot selections… however in terms of the main selections I am sticking with just two runners.

NAP Royal Intervention 15/8 (B365) – Ascot 13:50 – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

NB Shady Mccoy 12/1 (sky – 6 places) – Ascot 15:00 – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

Saturday Shortlisted Runners

Powerallied 2/1 (sky) – Chester 15:10 WON

  • 3 wins & 4 placed from 13 over course and distance
  • Fair 3rd last time & has been holding form well
  • Well drawn to attack from stall 1

Culturati 9/4 (sky) – York 14:05 Lost

  • Only raced 3 times since September 2015 but has won all 3 – winning on soft, good-to-soft and good ground and at distances of both 6 & 7 furlongs
  • Trainer C Appleby 42% winning strike rate in the last 2 weeks

Flying Pursuit 14/1 (betfred – 5 places) – York 14:40 WON

  • Won race last year and had made the frame in 3 from 6 over course and distance
  • 2lbs below last winning mark
  • 6 career victories, all over 6 furlongs, 5 of which came on good-to-soft, soft or heavy ground

Ascot

13:50 – Royal Intervention 15/8 (B365) – finished 2nd

Royal Intervention will likely go off as favourite but that is not such a bad thing as 5 of the last 6 runners of this race have won at odds of 2/1 or less. His debut on turf came at Newmarket at the end of June where he won over today’s race distance by an impressive 5 lengths and is well drawn in stall 1 (5 of the last 7 winners of this race came from stall 1) to attack from the off.

14:25 – Aquarium 14/1 e/w (sky – 5 places) – lost

A Tricky contest with a few who could play a part. I’ve opted for Aquarium at what should hopefully be a decent each-way price – He’s won his last two, his trainer is in form and jockey Ryan Moore tends to do well when riding for the trainer.

15:00 – Shady Mccoy 12/1 e/w (sky – 6 places) and Ripp Orf 11/1 e/w (sky – 6 places) – lost & 3rd

A very tough race to be overly confident in finding the winner, so happy to split stakes and throw two darts at this one.

Shady Mccoy was an excellent 2nd last time out, beating 16 other runners but just failing to catch a well-backed favourite, and both stable and jockey have been in fine form in recent weeks so I’d expect another strong run.

Ripp Orf won a competitive race at the beginning of July before a decent second last week. He has a course and distance win to his name and had mad the frame in 5 from 6 on turf so is another likely to give a strong run.

15:40 – Crystal Ocean 5/2 (Whill) – finished 2nd

Both Poets Word and Crystal Ocean come from the same yard and both arrive in excellent form so its difficult to split the two. Slight preference would be for Crystal Ocean as he has won at Ascot over this trip before and has won 3 from 4 over the distance.

16:15 – Victory Command 6/1 e/w (PP) – WON

Nate the Great will probably go off favourite for this race but I like the look of Victory Command who is so far unbeaten over this trip and won by 7 lengths last time out. This is a more difficult race but he’s progressing nicely and his trainer is in good form so he deserves his chance at this level.

16:50 – Robero 4/1 (B365) – Lost

A tricky race but Roberto looks to have a decent chance of getting involved – a prior winner at Ascot, proven over seven furlongs and has a solid amateur rider Serena Brotherton booked.

17:20 – What A Welcome 8/1 e/w (B365) – Lost

What A Welcome has won all 3 races so far this season and although has been put up a further 7lbs he is progressing nicely. He loves fast ground, has the same jockey booked as for the 3 earlier wins and arrives fresh enough having been off the track since the beginning of June. Sleeping Lion looks the danger but I prefer What A Welcome.
