Monday 19th August

Chester

16:55 – Ready Freddie Go 4/1 (sky) – 1pt win

Has shown promise in all turf runs to date, placing twice before a thoroughly convincing victory at Musselburgh last time out, making all to win by almost five lengths. He has a 3lbs claimer on board to offset some of the rise and is perfectly drawn in stall 2 to be able to force the pace again. If he gets an easy lead he will be difficult to peg back.

17:30 – True Blue Moon 5/1 (B365) – 1pt win

Prior course and distance winner Lincoln Park is back down to his last winning mark and is partnered with Silvestre De Sousa, who has been in the saddle for two of the four-year-olds three career wins, however all these victories have come with some cut in the ground and there doesn’t look to be enough rain forecast for the ground to change too much. With this in mind, preference would be for True Blue Moon who ran a decent third at York last time out and has been dropped a further 1lbs since. That run was encouraging enough to suggest he could be winning again soon.

18:30 – Major Jumbo 3/1 (B365) – 1pt win

Major Jumbo finished a couple of lengths behind Moss Gill (now NR) when they met at York last month but is better off at the weights here and should appreciate the step back up to 6f in an effort to win back-to-back renewals of this race. Again partnered with jockey Kevin Stott who is having an excellent season so far, they are unlikely to be too far away at the finish. Trainer Kevin Ryan has won this race four times since 2007 and also saddles Emaraaty Ana who is a little more inconsistent but did win a Group 2 race in 2018 and was a decent enough 3rd of 7 in a Group 3 at Newmarket when last seen in June. If he arrives on a going day it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see a big run.

Dark Pursuit was a Group 3 winner in Qatar and looks an interesting runner for an in-form trainer and a jockey who has a great strike rate at the course, while Judicial has twice won at the course and is tough as teak so cannot be dismissed despite having to give weight away all-round.

Richard Fahey has won three of the last five renewals of this race so while his runners Growl and Gabrial The Wire look to be outsiders in the early betting, both need to be watched as their owner Dr Marwan Koukash likes his winners at Chester.

19:00 – Data Protection 13/2 (B365) – 1pt win

It’s difficult to know which Sky Defender will turn up for this race, given that when racing on turf he tends to follow a pattern of one good race followed by a shocker. Given that he ran very well when 2nd to runaway winner Maydanny last time out, history suggests he may not fancy it today – for all he has the ability to win a race such as this, if he wants to.

On the whole, Desert Icon tends to be much more consistent, winning by eight lengths at Newmarket in June before finishing ahead of a number of todays’ rivals when seventh in the John Smiths Cup at York last month. He is probably the safer option of the two mentioned so far, yet Data Protection gets over a stone in weight from both and won well on return from a wind op at Newmarket last month. Conditions and trip are in his favour, as is a handy draw in stall 1.

Southwell

13:15 – Robyndzone 13/8 (B365) – 1pt win

Failed to land a blow over the smaller obstacles but has already won two from three over fences, and as such arrives here in search of his hat-trick. Up 10lbs but won with plenty in hand last time out and the yard have had 7 winners from their last 16 for a 44% winning strike rate so another strong run looks assured.

14:15 – Tidal Beach 7/2 (B365) – 1pt win

Finished behind both Isaac Wonder and Azzuri over course and distance in early July, but is better off at the weights with both this time around and didn’t look like he was given a hard ride once his chance was gone. A decent third at Newton Abbot last time out, where he travelled well before a mistake at the 2nd last stopped his momentum, suggests he can reverse the form especially given the form of both stable and jockey over the last two weeks.

Sunday 9th August

Nice to get a winner yesterday with Chil Chil, our only main selection on what looked to be an average day of racing for a Saturday. Sunday looks to be a better day for quality and as such we have 3x win selections and 1x each way selection.

Aberama Gold 12/1 (sky – 4 places) – Thirsk 14:30 – 0.5pts e/w 4th +1pt

I am going to stick my neck on the line by saying Muscika won’t be winning. Yes he is a three-time course and distance winner and arrives here on the back of a decent win at York last time out, however he has never won off a mark higher than 87 and has never followed up a victory with another next time out. Abate and Swissterious finished 1st & 2nd at York when last seen – both step up in class but Swissterious is 5lbs better off this time around so could reverse that form. Intrinsic Bond is two from two with Jason Hart in the saddle but is another stepping up in class off a 7lbs higher mark so I would be willing to take a chance on Aberama Gold who won a Listed contest last season and now has his sights lowered having raced at either Group or Listed level since.

Earthlight 7/4 (B365) – Deauville 14:50 – 2pts win Lost -2pts

This looks to be a cracking renewal, with Hello Youmzain likely to take them along from the front and the in-form Charlie Appleby yard sending over the thriving Space Blues as he aims for Group 1 glory. Golden Horde is already a Group 1 winner having won the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot in June but was then surprisingly only 3rd in the July Cup at Newmarket last month. He didn’t run badly but it was a race he was expected to win, and he has already had to play second-fiddle to the unbeaten Earthlight so I see no reason why that form should be reversed. Earthlight is unbeaten in six career runs, with three of those coming here at Deauville. He will need to be at his best to win, but for me is simply the best horse in the race so arrives here with every chance of keeping his unbeaten record intact.

Steel Bull 3/1 (Whill) – Curragh 15:10 – 2pt win Lost -2pts

Steel Bull was an impressive winner on debut and backed that up with a fantastic victory in the Molecomb at Goodwood last time out, overcoming traffic problems and powering to the lead once finding an opening. He finishes his races very strongly so the step up to 6f should pose no concerns. Ventura Tormenta and The Lir Jet will make sure this isn’t a procession, however I feel they could take each other on and leave the door open for Steel Bull to swoop late for victory.

Duke Of Hazzard 7/2 (B365) – Salisbury 15:25 – 2pts win Lost -2pts

Finished last season with a hat-trick of victories over a mile (Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 level) and has improved for each run so far this season, finishing a solid 3rd on penultimate run before an excellent 2nd to Space Blues last time out. Boasts three wins and a 2nd (by a short head) from 4 runs when racing in August so seems to peak at this time of the year and looks to have an excellent chance of gaining victory here now dropping back in grade.

Won over this trip by 3 lengths on penultimate run, before finding 12f too far last time out. Back down to 10f here, and 5lbs claimer offsets the weight rise.

Hay 14:15 – Cornborough 7/1 (B365) – 0.5pts e/w Lost (4th) -1pt

Prior course and distance winner who has made the frame on all four runs at the course. 3lbs below last winning mark and in-form jockey (37% win strike rate in the last 2 weeks) takes off a further 3lbs.

Hay 14:45 – Solent Gateway 2/1 (boyles) – 1pt win Lost -1pt

Two decent placed efforts to date and although had no chance against the winner last time out he finished clear of the rest, and 4th that day has won since. Trainer Tom Dascombe tends to do well at the course and his runner should be capable of victory here.

Hay 15:15 – Mountain Peak 7/2 (BV) – 1pt win WON +3.5pts

Is two from two over course and distance and ran two excellent races off todays’ mark at Ascot the last twice. Partnered with the in-form William Buick (rode a 4-timer at Newmarket on Saturday) and has perfect conditions for another big run here.

Mighty Gurkha 6/4 (B365) – Deauville 13:35 – 2pts win Lost -2pts

Mighty Gurkha was a respectable fifth in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot in June, a race that has so far produced four subsequent winners, and then ran a mighty race when 2nd to Method in a Listed race at Newbury last month. Trainer Archie Watson continues to fire in the winners and his runner brings the best form to this race.

Cairn Gorm is unbeaten in two and should enjoy conditions, however both races were in much lower grades and trainer Mick Channon has only had one winner from thirty-four runners in the last two weeks.

Molinari 7/4 (B365) – Sandown 15:20 – 2pts win Lost -2pts

Won over this trip at Windsor on penultimate run, before following up with an excellent neck 2nd to Tenbury Wells (rated 82) in a class 4 race at Ascot last time out. Drops back in class for todays’ race and recent form sets the standard. Disappointed to have missed the 11/4 available last night but I can see this going off shorter than the 7/4 currently available so happy to have a play.

Miss Yoda 8/1 (B365) – Dusseldorf 14:30 – 1pt win WON +8pts

Really interesting to see John Gosden and Frankie Dettori over in Germany with Miss Yoda. Things haven’t quite gone to plan since winning the Oaks trial at Lingfield but this looks a winnable race and she’s well drawn in stall 1 so i’m willing to take a chance that she can get back to winning ways today.

13:50 – Tommy G 9/2 (sky) – 2pts win Lost -2pts

Jim Goldie looks to have a strong hand here, running both Call Me Ginger and Tommy G sitting towards the head of the market. The former showed signs that a return to form was imminent with a decent 2nd to Meraas at Hamilton last week, but it is the latter that interests me most. Tommy G finished 2nd in this race in 2017, won it in 2018 and was 3rd last year. His victory came off a mark of 81 and he races off just 72 today, and has perfect conditions to be able to put in another strong run here.

Rewaayat has won on both runs since racing restarted, the latter a seven-length procession at Salisbury last month, but has been put up 12lbs for that effort so may struggle to bring up the hat-trick.

14:25 – Themaxwecan 8/1 e/w (B365) Lost

Trainer Mark Johnston has won this race three times in the last five years, last year with Kings Advice who runs again today. Kings Advice actually runs here off 4lbs lower than last season but has failed to fire so far in 2020 so preference is for Themaxwecan who won on on only prior visit to Goodwood and has conditions to suit as all three career turf wins have come on fast ground. He’s not always the most consistent but does have talent and I feel is capable of winning a race like this off his current mark.

15:00 – Enbihaar 8/11 (B365) WON

It would be somewhat of a shock in Enbihaar couldn’t win this race for the 2nd year in succession. She gave a stone to Manuela De Vega last year and still won by five lengths – this year Manuela De Vega has to give Enbihaar 3lbs despite being rated 3lbs lower than her rival. Manuela De Vega has been in top form so far this season, but shouldn’t be capable of reversing the form unless Enbihaar runs a shocker.

15:35 – Watan 10/1 e/w (sky – 6 places) – 1pt e/w Lost -2pts

Watan is a prior course and distance winner who finished an excellent 2nd behind Nahaarr last month, on first run in 12 months, and gets a 7lbs swing in the weights this time around. He is partnered with Ryan Moore and a big run looks assured.

16:10 – King Ragnar 13/2 e/w (sky) 3rd

My original pick is now NR so instead we will opt for King Ragnar who won well on fast ground at Leicester two weeks ago, with the 5th from that race winning next time out. The fave may well prove tough to beat but at the prices and with 8 runners still in the race I expect King Ragnar to be able to pick up some place money at the very least.

16:40 – Golden Flame 3/1 (B365) Lost

Finished 4th behind Battleground and March Law in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Ascot in June, following up on a solid 2nd on debut. Only a tentative selection given there are a lot of unknowns in the race, but the Mark Johnston runner has shown enough to suggest he will be winning soon.

17:10 – You’re Hired 14/1 e/w (sky – 5 places) 3rd

Exec Chef looks to be on a decent handicap mark on first run for his new yard, while Muraad has posted two solid 2nd placed finishes so far this season and has the talented Cieren Fallon in the saddle, but has gone up another 2lbs despite not visiting the winners enclosure. At the prices I am happy to take a chance on You’re Hired who has a decent record at the course (has made the frame in 3 from 6), finishing 2nd in this very race last year. He is possibly a little high in the handicap but will find this easier than the race he contested earlier in the week and will also appreciate the faster ground conditions.

13:10 – Al Qaqaa 2/1 (B365) Lost

Al Qaqaa won by eight lengths over todays’ trip on good to firm ground last time out, with the fourth from that race going on to win since, so with both trainer and jockey in form and both conditions and trip proven to suit he looks the one they all have to beat.

Mafia Power was fourth of five at Newmarket last month but was still only 2 lengths behind the winner and that race has produced two Class 2 winners so the form looks decent. He followed up with an impressive four length victory at Haydock last time out and Silvestre De Sousa keeps the ride so he looks to be the biggest danger if seeing out this longer trip.

13:45 – Breathtaking Look 13/2 e/w (BV) Lost (4th)

Four of her five career wins have come over a 7f trip so its no surprise to see One Master drop back from the 8f she encountered in the Falmouth at Newmarket when last seen. She is also dropping down in grade but the concern I would have is that all victories have come on ground with a bit of give. She may well win with ease but at the price I am happy to pass over.

Invitational has done all her winning over a 7f trip but is another who has shown her best turf form on soft ground, so a chance is taken on Breathtaking Look who won the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes over 7f on good to firm ground last September and has been running over differing trips since. Given she is a 3-time winner over this trip the return to 7f could prove significant.

14:15 – My Oberon 7/2 (B365) 2nd

A really intriguing race as the hot-favourite Khaloosy beat four subsequent winners when breezing to a four length victory at Ascot but is yet to encounter fast ground (has only raced on the AW and soft ground).

Tilsit won by an incredible 19 lengths at Newcastle when last seen, however now switches to turf and steps up markedly in class at the same time. Ryan Moore takes the ride and he looks to be an exciting runner for all he has to prove he handles turf.

My Oberon won by six lengths at York earlier in the month, with the third a further six lengths behind, and given this run came on good ground over todays’ trip he could prove to be the sensible play.

14:45 – Montatham 13/2 (B365) – 1pt win NR

Love this horse! Two wins and a close 2nd from 3 over a mile, turning the tables on Dark Vision (who won a listed contest next time out) at Sandown when last seen. Up 4lbs but should be capable of further progression – I feel could be a Listed or even Group winner by the end of the season.

15:15 – Battaash 1/3 (B365) WON

Hopefully just a case of sit back and enjoy the master at work.

15:45 – Desert Encounter 9/4 (B365) – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Won this race last season and has perfect conditions to go in again today.

16:20 – Perotto 11/2 (PP) 2nd

16:55 – Ventura Diamond 3/1 (B365) WON

Thursday 30th July

Goodwood Day 3

Tomorrow looks to be a tricky day – most races have two or even three that I think could win if everything falls their way. As such, I am only playing points on the two that I feel most strongly about.

13:10 – Electric Ladyland 9/2 (B365) 4th

Bal Mal is 5 from 5 over this trip and arrives here in excellent form having won 4 in a row since switching back to turf. He will no doubt be a popular choice for many in the opener, however steps up in grade and carries a 6lbs penalty so may find his winning run come to an end here.

Preference is for Electric Ladyland who won over course and distance last month and again when last seen at Windsor. He meets the 2nd from that day Caspian Queen on slightly worse terms but is 2 from 2 with Hollie Doyle in the saddle and with Archie Watson’s stable amongst the winners in recent weeks I think he can confirm that form and gain another victory here.

13:45 – Zabeel Champion 5/1 (B365) 2nd

Mark Johnston (6) and John Gosden (4) have won 50% of the last twenty renewals and both look to have decent chances of adding to their respective tallies. Magical Morning has won two over a mile and the step up in trip promises to bring about improvement from the John Gosden runner but Zabeel Champion has already won two over todays’ trip, beating three subsequent winners in the process, and looks capable of defying the 8lbs higher mark.

14:15 – Yazaman 15/8 (B365) – 2pts win 2nd -2pts

Yazaman has had to play second fiddle to Tactical the last twice but has still finished ahead of some highly regarded runners and proved he stays 6f when staying on last time out and finishing three lengths ahead of his market rival Qaader in the process. Both are entitled to step forwards again, but I see no reason for the form to be reversed. The Cox/Kirby combo won this race last year so Supremacy who won in a lower grade last time out warrants respect, while it is too soon to be writing off Admiral Nelson despite disappointing in the Coventry Stakes last time out.

14:45 – English King 5/4 (B365) Lost

Al Aasy was a ten-length winner of a novice race at Newmarket in June, before following up with an equally impressive victory in the Group 3 Bahrain Stakes last time out. Both wins came in softer conditions than he will encounter today and he also has to give the rest of the field 3lbs but despite both these negatives he could go close. That said, I fancy English King to bounce back from disappointment in the Derby and show more of the brilliance he showed when winning the Derby Trial by three lengths from Berkshire Royal.

15:15 – Fancy Blue 9/4 (B365) – 2pts win WON (SP 11/4) +5.5pts

Diedre won this race last season but is her only career win to date and I can’t see her following up here. Nazeef is unbeaten in her last six, including the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes when last seen, and now steps up in trip for todays’ race. An obvious danger if seeing out the trip, however I really like the chances of Fancy Blue. An encouraging 2nd to Peaceful in the Irish 1000 Guineas, her first run since moving over from Aidan O’Brien, she then went one better when beating Alpine Star and reversing the form with Peaceful in winning the Group 1 Prix De Diane over todays’ trip. For me, this is the best form on offer and a similar run would see her gain victory here.

15:45 – Running Back 13/2 e/w (BV) Lost

Placed in both runs to date, both over the minimum trip, suggesting he may benefit for the step up in trip, so offers a bit of value against the much shorter priced favourite.

16:20 – Iconic Queen 9/1 e/w (PP) 2nd (SP 11/1)

16:55 – Winter Power 8/11 (B365) Lost
